A lot has been said about the new Zero Moment of Truth (ZMOT) model and how it has turned the old “purchase funnel” literally on its side. ZMOT describes the auto purchase process as a more linear process than a funnel. It starts with “Stimulus,” in the form of TV or other traditional media.

Text vs Email
This year ExactTarget (a global Software as a Service Provider SaaS) conducted research to determine the change in preferences for Personal Communication VS. Permission-Based Promotions. They were tracking how people prefer to communicate with each other versus how they prefer to receive offers and ads. Text Messaging increased from 16% to 36% for Personal Communication between 2008 and 2012, while Email dropped from 66% to 45%. However, for Permission-Based Promotions consumers chose Email marketing 77%, up from 72%, VS. 5% for Text Messaging, up from 1%. The bottom line is while our preference for personal communication is quickly leaning towards Text Messaging, we still prefer ads over Email overwhelmingly.
